Can we just start playing, please?

Kudos to ESPN (did I just write those words?), for putting some ideas out there for people to debate. The question, which is better College Football or the NFL?

First Ivan Maisel, gives 20 reasons why college is better the pro. I can’t say I disagree with any of his points. Tradition and passion make college football great. The quality of play and lack of a true champion are the most irritating things about college football. Let’s face it, when you tune into a college game, you are likely to end up watching a blowout. With an NFL game, you are going to get a good quality game that isn’t decided until the fourth quarter.

Len Pasquarelli’s defense of the NFL is open to more attack. Yes, the playoffs are much better than college football bowl games. However, does Len really think that mascots are better in the NFL? And his attack on the fact that no college announcers have signature catch phrases is just an embarrassment to journalism. Hey Len, ever heard “It’s football time in Tennessee” or “Toooooouchdoownnnn Auburn!!!!” or “Give him six.” Plus, does anyone even listen to NFL games on the radio?

Pat Forde does a nice job summarizing the arguments and presenting a scorecard. I have to agree with most of his points. In the end, I enjoy watching the pro game on television more than watching college. However, nothing compares to being at a college football game in person. The atmosphere, the passion of the crowd, the sweet smell of whiskey and coke…..ahhh, heaven.
