Nightmare in Colombia on Thursday the 28th

Don’t get all hysterical on me about the title of this post. Wasn’t that game like a bad mid-1980’s slasher film? It scared the living hell out of you even though you knew a happy ending was coming.

Cast

Slasher: Steve Spurrier/Syvelle Newton

This fits both of them really. Both terrorized Auburn. The Ball Coach with his excellent, well thought game plan and adjustments and Newton because he would not die.

Stupid Football Player Who Gets Knifed in the Stomach While Making Out with the Cheerleader: Will Muschamp

Dude looked like he didn’t even see it coming. I have never seen a coach that looked so damn lost on the sideline. Just like you never go make out in a place named Crystal Lake or Serenity Creek, you don’t rush 3 guys against a quarterback who got beat out by Blake Mitchell and an offensive line starting two true freshmen. What happened the three times Auburn blitzed on the last drive? Three incompletions. It wasn’t his entire fault. You know Tuberville told him at the start of the fourth quarter to play it conservative, don’t give up the big play, let them dink and dunk down the filed and waste time. Not a bad strategy, but still maddening.

Miscellaneous Extra Cast Members that are Graphically Slayed Before Your Eyes: Auburn’s Secondary and Linebackers

This was a horrid night for the secondary. Poor coverage, poor tackling, poor scheme. Ugh. Some died quickly (Zach Gilbert), some died slowly (Linebackers), some were barely scratched (David Irons).

Hero That Stands Up and Kills the Slasher: Tommy Tuberville/Al Borges/Brandon Cox

Don’t get me wrong, Tuberville got Auburn into trouble by playing very conservative defense in the fourth quarter, but he gets credit for the onside kick. Brilliant move. Al and Brandon get credit for the offense. Brandon Cox has balls of steel. Tuberville and Borges did all they could to set him up for failure by going for it on 4th and 6 and 3rd and 21, but he came through.

True to form, the slasher was seemingly killed, but came alive for one more scene. If the offense picks up one or two first downs on the lone fourth quarter drive, the game is pretty much over. However, South Carolina would not die. Give credit to them for staying in the game and not quitting. Oh and a little credit to Auburn’s defensive scheme which allowed them to drive down the field.
So where does this leave us? I have no idea. None. This team hasn't put together the complete team effort. One week the offense looks good and defense terrible, the next week vice versa. But hey, Auburn is 5-0, 3-0 in the SEC and on the way to a trip to Atlanta. As The Car Wash is saying, it could be worse.
